Another great book come movie. If you manage to get through the Scottish slang (there's a dictionary in the American edition) you'll find a somewhat jumbled story but very true to life. Yes, it is not a merry tale, it's a book about poverty, addiction and loss but also a story about those bonds that tie people together and make us human. Nevertheless, it is real and even though it might not appeal to everyone, it will to those who don't fear reality.

The old cliche is indeed true, the original beats the film. This is a story about life, music, about lost love, a lot about love, a lot about men and how we men think of women and love. Hornby does take on the male perspective but it should nonetheless appeal to women, if not just for the fun of seeing things from "the other side" but also because of the somewhat ironic yet utterly human humor that shapes Rob's view of life.

This book meant a lot to me, it was the book that opened my eyes to the world of philosophy and actually discussed those questions I, like many others, had always been pondering. It's an extremely well-written introduction to the greatest thinkers and woven into that, a plot that will keep you hooked and will make you start wondering about your own existence.

I was reading this book while on a vacation on the Azores and in spite of the amazingly beautful surroundings, I was hooked! I can't make this book justice in just a few words, but basically it's about the magic of life, death, love, family and friends and all it entails told with a pace and lovely immersive narrative with a genuine feel for the age it portrays. You must read this book! Some call it The Great American Novel, I'm prepared to agree.
