Perhaps surprisingly however the word kobold has a positive meaning, most likely an attempt to avoid the wrath of the goblins. The metal known to us as cobalt was extracted from this rock, but the raw rock could also be used as the source of a color pigment which is the origin of the color term cobalt blue.
